IQNA – An Iraqi religious scholar emphasized the significance of adhering to recommended practices during the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Arbaeen pilgrims in Iraq

Arbaeen is one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings, with recent pilgrimages drawing over 21 million devotees to Karbala, Iraq.

Every year, believers—mostly Shia Muslims—walk nearly 80 km from Najaf to Karbala over several days, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and the end of a 40-day mourning period.

In an interview with IQNA, Professor Sattar Qasim Abdullah, from the College of Islamic Sciences in Iraq’s Dhi Qar University, outlined key rituals for pilgrims participating in the Arbaeen walk.

“Arbaeen is an important religious tradition for Shia Muslims, commemorating the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS),” he said.

“Followers of Imam Hussein’s (AS) path should observe certain etiquettes, including giving charity, wearing clean clothes, reciting specific prayers, adhering to timely prayers, maintaining modesty in attire and speech, and avoiding inappropriate behavior,” he stressed.

Abdullah added that Arbaeen pilgrims must avoid actions that could harm the dignity of the religious event.

The Iraqi scholar also underscored the importance of devotional acts during the pilgrimage.

“Supplication and remembrance are central to Arbaeen,” he explained. “They serve as a means to connect with Imam Hussein (AS), express devotion, and honor his stand against oppression.”

Asked about Arbaeen’s role in fostering unity among Muslims, Abdullah noted its profound effect on solidarity.

“The Arbaeen procession strengthens bonds of brotherhood and love among believers. It has grown into a massive event, drawing participants from across the region, including non-Muslims, adding a new dimension to its significance.”

He also highlighted the communal spirit, with hosts and guests working together, reinforcing a sense of collective belonging.
